David Lynch: The mind-bending director of Twin Peaks who totally leans into the weird.

David Lynch once said he was inspired to become a filmmaker when he was painting, heard a gust of wind, and saw the artwork start moving right there on the canvas.

David Lynch, the iconic American director known for achieving mainstream success while exploring strange, groundbreaking, and experimental projects, has passed away at the age of 78.

“With heavy hearts, we, his family, share the news of David Lynch’s passing — both the man and the artist,” read a post on Facebook. “We ask for privacy during this difficult time. The world feels so much emptier without him. But as he always said, ‘Keep your eye on the donut, not the hole.’ Today is a beautiful day with golden sunshine and blue skies.”

Born in Missoula, Montana, in 1946, David Lynch attended art school in the 1960s, where he created his first experimental short film, Six Men Getting Sick, while studying at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 1971, Lynch moved to Los Angeles and enrolled in the AFI Conservatory to study filmmaking. It was there that he started working on his first feature, Eraserhead. After years of effort, he finally completed the surreal black-and-white fable in 1976. Initially met with confusion and rejected by most film festivals, the film eventually found its audience in the late ’70s as a cult hit on the late-night “midnight movie” circuit.

David Lynch has earned numerous awards and nominations throughout his career, including three Academy Award nods for Best Director and one for Best Adapted Screenplay. He’s also won France’s prestigious César Award for Best Foreign Film twice, along with the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. In addition, Lynch was honored with a Golden Lion award for lifetime achievement at the Venice Film Festival.

The French government recognized his contributions by awarding him the Legion of Honour, their highest civilian award—first as a Chevalier in 2002 and later as an Officier in 2009. Lynch has even been given the key to the city of Bydgoszcz, Poland.
