Nancy Pelosi is facing a primary challenge from a former aide of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
A new chapter is unfolding in the ongoing generational clash over the future of the Democratic Party, this time in San Francisco, where former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is facing a primary challenge.
Saikat Chakrabarti, a former chief of staff to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, announced on Wednesday that he will challenge Pelosi in the upcoming primary. In his announcement, Chakrabarti pointed to Pelosi’s efforts to block Ocasio-Cortez from becoming the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, arguing that the country has changed significantly since Pelosi first entered politics 45 years ago.
“I respect what Nancy Pelosi has done in her career, but we are living in a completely different America now,” said Chakrabarti, a 39-year-old former tech worker. “America is stuck, and people want real solutions that match the scale of our problems.”
Pelosi, who stepped down as speaker in 2022 after nearly two decades in the role, easily won reelection to her San Francisco seat last year. Her office has declined to comment on Chakrabarti’s challenge. Although Pelosi has filed paperwork to run for reelection in 2026, she has not made a public statement about whether she intends to seek another term. State Sen. Scott Wiener has long been rumored as a potential candidate if Pelosi decides to retire, and some have speculated that Pelosi’s daughter, Christine, might run for the seat as well.
The winner of the primary will likely secure the general election, as San Francisco remains a stronghold for the Democratic Party.
Pelosi and Ocasio-Cortez have at times had a tense relationship. Most recently, Pelosi opposed Ocasio-Cortez’s bid to lead the House Oversight Committee, supporting Rep. Gerry Connolly of Virginia instead.
Chakrabarti, who also worked for Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, criticized Pelosi’s backing of Connolly and called for change in the Democratic Party. “Seeing the chaos unleashed by Trump and Elon, it’s clear that the Democratic Party needs new leadership,” he said.
