‘On top of the world’: Mark Fogel celebrates his first breakfast back in the US

American teacher Mark Fogel, who spent more than a year in detention in Russia, is finally back home in the US, and enjoying his first moments of freedom. Sitting down to a long-awaited breakfast with his family, Fogel described the experience as surreal and emotional. “I feel on top of the world,” he said, reflecting on his newfound freedom after months of uncertainty and hardship.

Being detained in Russia: A long ordeal

Fogel, a history teacher who worked at the Anglo-American School in Moscow, was arrested in August 2021 for possessing a small amount of medical marijuana, which he said was prescribed for chronic pain. Despite explaining the therapeutic nature of the substance, Russian authorities charged him with drug trafficking. Fogel was then sentenced to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment in a Russian penal colony, a sentence widely criticised as excessive and politically motivated.

His case gained increased attention in the US amid growing tensions between the two countries. Supporters and advocacy groups pressed for his release, emphasising the humanitarian aspects of his situation and calling for more diplomatic efforts to secure his freedom.

Negotiation over freedom

Fogel’s release came after months of quiet diplomatic negotiations that culminated in a deal between US and Russian officials. Although the details of the agreement have not been fully disclosed, it is being seen as a significant breakthrough in the ongoing diplomatic talks between the two countries.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed relief and joy at Fogel’s return, saying, “We are grateful to all those who worked tirelessly to bring Mark back home. It’s a testament to the power of diplomacy and perseverance.”

A Joyful Reunion

Upon his arrival, Fogel was greeted by his family and close friends who had been eagerly awaiting his return. His first breakfast back home was a simple but meaningful moment – eggs, toast and fresh fruit – symbolizing a return to normal life and the comforts of home.

“It’s the little things that matter the most,” Fogel said. “Being with family, having a meal without worrying about what’s next – that’s something I’ll never take for granted again.” His family called the reunion a blessing, and thanked supporters and U.S. authorities for their efforts in securing his release.

Looking Ahead

Now back in the U.S., Fogel is focused on rebuilding his life and reconnecting with loved ones. Although he acknowledges it will take time to come to terms with this experience, he remains optimistic about the future. “I’m happy to be home,” he said, adding that he plans to continue raising awareness for others unjustly detained around the world.

For now, Mark Fogel’s journey is a reminder of the power of resilience and hope, as he begins a new chapter of his life — grateful, grounded and finally free.
