The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star recently revealed she has multiple nodules on her brain after suffering ‘severe and debilitating’ headaches for several weeks.
Headaches are one of the most common ailments in the US, affecting 96% of Americans at some point. Most are harmless, but in rare cases, headaches can be the first warning sign of malignant tumors.
Morning headaches can indicate a tumor putting pressure on the skull during sleep, while headaches triggered by coughing or sneezing can also be a warning sign. Vomiting and nausea are red flags, as increased brain pressure can trigger these symptoms.
A history of melanoma is another risk factor, as 70% of patients with advanced melanoma develop brain tumors. About 100,000 Americans are diagnosed with brain tumors each year, with 25% of those being cancerous.
Other brain tumor symptoms include seizures, difficulty speaking, personality changes, weakness, numbness, hearing or vision changes, and loss of balance. The American Cancer Society reports that 18,000 Americans die from brain or spinal cord tumors annually.
Pediatric ER physician Dr. Meghan Martin highlights morning headaches as a major warning sign, explaining that lying down increases pressure on brain tissue, which worsens pain overnight. She also pointed out that pressure on the brain stem can stimulate vomiting, making headaches accompanied by nausea another serious cause for concern.
Pain from coughing or sneezing may indicate that a tumor is irritating surrounding tissues and blood vessels, further heightening the risk.
