2025 iPhone SE 4 to Feature Apple's First Custom 5G Chip

Apple is set to launch the budget iPhone SE 4 on Wednesday, featuring a larger display, a design similar to higher-end models, and upgraded internals, including its first in-house 5G modem. However, recent reports suggest that Apple’s custom modem will deliver worse performance compared to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X75 modem found in the iPhone 16 lineup.

While Apple’s modem is expected to be a step back in performance, it will serve as a testing ground for future improvements, much like the company’s M-series chips. Apple’s modem is speculated to lack mmWave 5G support and feature fewer carrier aggregation options, resulting in slower speeds than Qualcomm’s X75.

The iPhone SE 4 will bring significant upgrades, such as a OLED display, the A18 chip, Apple Intelligence, and a revised design. The main compromises include a single-lens camera, Apple’s custom modem, and a notch instead of Dynamic Island. It remains to be seen if the iPhone SE 4 will feature an Action Button, which could make it a strong competitor to standard models.
