The Weather Channel app introduces a probabilistic snowfall feature, giving premium users more accurate insights to plan for winter weather with greater confidence.
The Weather Channel app has unveiled a new premium snowfall forecasting feature—available first on iOS—offering users a more detailed and reliable winter weather experience. This advanced feature uses AI-powered probabilistic forecasting to provide a range of possible snowfall outcomes up to 72 hours in advance, helping users plan with confidence. Unlike traditional deterministic forecasts, which offer a single predicted outcome, probabilistic forecasts display the likelihood of various snowfall amounts, giving users a clearer picture of potential scenarios.
For instance, while a typical forecast might predict 5 inches of snow in the next 24 hours, a probabilistic forecast may show there’s also a chance of getting as little as 1 inch or as much as 10 inches. This transparency helps users better understand the uncertainty and prepare for a wide range of possibilities, from light flurries to significant snowstorms.
“Our goal is to give people the full spectrum of what’s possible with winter weather,” said Peter Neilley, Ph.D., director of weather forecasting sciences at The Weather Company. “Probabilistic forecasts help reduce surprises and allow users to make smarter decisions based on a range of outcomes.”
This new feature follows the app’s recent launch of dynamic Activity Forecasts and enhanced health insights for allergies, UV exposure, and outdoor activities like hiking and cycling. Premium users can also access localized air travel forecasts to help manage weather conditions at key travel points.
Now available for Premium users on iOS, the probabilistic snowfall feature will soon roll out to Android. Download The Weather Channel app from the Apple App Store for a next-level winter weather experience.
