former speechwriter for President Obama and co-host of the “Pod Save America”
On January 20, 2025, Jon Favreau, a former speechwriter for President Obama and co-host of the “Pod Save America” podcast, joined “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” to reflect on the Democratic Party’s loss in the 2024 presidential election. Favreau pointed out that Democrats failed to address the concerns of voters, particularly around economic issues and growing unease about President Biden’s age. He remarked, “The Democratic Party needs to learn to listen. Over the past four years, a majority of Americans have been saying prices are too high, inflation is too high, and the White House responded with, ‘No, everything is fine. Look at these numbers.'”
Favreau also criticized the decision to back President Biden for re-election, despite widespread concerns about his age, arguing that many felt it was time for new leadership. He stated, “As Democrats, we often believe that simply being right is enough. But being right isn’t enough—you have to convince people to believe in what you’re saying.”
Additionally, co-host Tommy Vietor, another former Obama aide, acknowledged President Trump’s role in brokering a cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas, giving him “a lot of credit” for the accomplishment.
The conversation underscored internal criticisms within the Democratic Party, focusing on the importance of connecting with voters’ priorities and refining strategies to regain public support in future elections.
