Top U.S. Treasury Official to Depart After Clash with Elon Musk’s Allies Over Payment System Access

David Lebryk, the top-ranking career official at the U.S. Treasury Department, is set to leave his post following a disagreement with allies of billionaire Elon Musk regarding access to a key payment system. This system oversees the distribution of more than $6 trillion annually, including Social Security and Medicare benefits, federal salaries, government contract payments, and tax refunds. The reasons behind Musk’s team’s interest in this system remain unclear.

Sources familiar with the matter suggest that the clash stemmed from differing views on the use of the payment system, which is critical to the operation of federal financial transactions. Although representatives from Musk’s team, including those linked to his ventures like DOGE, were unavailable for comment, the situation has sparked significant tension.

It was not immediately clear when Lebryk would officially step down, but reports indicate that his departure is imminent. Lebryk, who has held nonpolitical roles in government for several decades, will leave at a time when Scott Bessent has just been confirmed as Treasury Secretary.
