The Nintendo Switch 2 was officially announced this week, and to everyone’s excitement (but no one’s surprise), it will feature backwards compatibility.
There were plenty of leaks and rumors swirling before Nintendo finally unveiled the Switch 2, but most of us expected it to support Switch games. Nintendo has a solid track record of making sure its consoles, including handhelds, can play titles from the previous generation, and this time is no exception.
“Backwards compatibility was pretty much unavoidable,” says industry analyst Serkan Toto. “Nintendo sold 1 billion Switch games, so it only makes sense to let buyers of the new device bring their library with them.”
I always knew Nintendo had sold close to 150 million Switch consoles, but I never realized just how many games people had purchased. When you do the math, that’s an average of seven games per player, so the number checks out.
