The Border 2 Fire, which started on January 23, 2025, near the Otay Mountain Truck Trail in the Otay Mountain Wilderness, has quickly grown to over 4,250 acres with 10% containment. The fire is spreading at a moderate pace and threatening critical communication infrastructure on Otay Mountain.

Firefighters are battling extreme fire conditions, including long-range spotting, which has impacted Otay Lakes Road and led to evacuation orders.

A large vegetation fire broke out Thursday afternoon on a hilltop near the U.S.-Mexico border. As night fell, the flames lit up Otay Mountain with an eerie glow.
Shortly before 2:30 p.m., firefighters reported the fire had already scorched 20 acres and was spreading rapidly. However, by evening, they had slowed the fire’s advance to a moderate pace, showing progress in their containment efforts.

By 8:40 p.m., the fire had spread to 600 acres. By 5.10 a.m. Friday, it had grown to 1,050 acres, and by 6:40 a.m., the blaze had expanded to 4,350 acres with 12% containment.
