Carrie Underwood delivers an a cappella rendition of ‘America the Beautiful’ after a reported tech glitch at the inauguration.

It wasn’t exactly planned, but country star Carrie Underwood stole the spotlight for a moment at President Donald Trump’s second inauguration on Monday when a tech glitch prompted her to sing “America the Beautiful” a cappella.

Underwood was introduced to perform the song with the Armed Forces Chorus right after Trump’s speech—though technically out of order. She approached the podium, appearing to wait for the music to start. The music began briefly but then cut out, leaving Underwood chuckling and glancing around.

After about a minute of silence and scattered laughter from the crowd, Underwood stepped up to the mic and said, “If you know the words, help me out here.” She then began singing “America the Beautiful” a cappella, with the crowd gradually joining in.

The voices grew louder, and members of the Armed Forces Chorus appeared to be singing along as well. It’s unclear what caused the technical issue that led Underwood to perform without accompaniment, but the impromptu moment earned cheers and applause from the audience.

Once finished, Underwood graciously acknowledged the crowd’s applause, shaking hands with outgoing President Joe Biden, President Trump, and incoming Vice President JD Vance before leaving the stage. She had originally been scheduled to perform after Vice President Vance’s oath of office and before Trump’s.
Trump Plans to Rename Gulf of Mexico and Mount Denali
Underwood’s performance wasn’t the only highlight of the day. Last week, Trump announced plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America and revert Mount Denali back to its previous name, Mount McKinley.

In a statement before the inauguration, Underwood shared her gratitude for the opportunity to perform, saying she was “honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration” and “humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”

Despite her powerful performance, Underwood has long avoided discussing politics. In a 2019 interview with she explained, “I feel like more people try to pin me places politically. I try to stay far out of politics if possible, at least in public, because nobody wins. It’s crazy. Everybody tries to sum everything up and put a bow on it, like it’s black and white. And it’s not like that.”
