Elon Musk’s recent efforts to gain access to the U.S. Treasury’s payment systems have raised significant concerns.

In less than two weeks, Elon Musk’s attempts to run the federal government as if it were one of his businesses have already caused an unprecedented level of chaos and inefficiency.

Earlier this week, the White House attempted to freeze federal funding for critical programs like SNAP, Medicaid, and others that millions of working families depend on. The move was so disastrous that the courts stepped in and forced the administration to reverse course. Musk and his allies have also been busy reshaping the federal workforce, pushing for “deferred resignations” and replacing experienced civil servants with his own loyalists. The Office of Personnel Management, the agency responsible for staffing the entire federal government, is now under the control of Musk cronies.

On Friday, the highest-ranking career official at the Treasury Department, David A. Lebryk, resigned after refusing to hand over control of the government’s payment system — a system responsible for handling trillions of dollars in Social Security payments, Medicare benefits, and more. While it’s still unclear what Musk plans to do with this critical system, some potential motives have emerged.

One possibility is that Musk could use this access to freeze government funding directly, bypassing the courts and cutting off funding to essential programs like Medicaid and Meals on Wheels. He could also gain control over the “Do Not Pay” list, which tracks individuals or contractors the government has blacklisted, potentially allowing him to influence who the government does business with. Considering Musk’s massive government contracts, this could give him unprecedented power over his rivals and the flow of taxpayer money.

There are concerns that Musk’s involvement could also put Social Security and Medicare benefits at risk. Musk has previously voiced plans to slash $2 trillion from the federal budget, and although he’s since toned down those figures, even a $1 trillion cut would severely damage the social safety net that millions of Americans rely on.

Musk isn’t just targeting these cuts for the sake of saving money — he’s helping Republicans fund tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy, including himself. The idea that Musk is working alongside civil servants to improve technology and save money is increasingly hard to believe, especially as he seeks access to sensitive government data and undermines vital programs.

Fortunately, Americans are seeing through Musk’s efforts. A recent poll found that 52% of Americans view him unfavorably, and less than a third approve of his management of DOGE. The public doesn’t want an unelected billionaire making decisions about what working families can or can’t afford. If Musk plans to continue running the government like one of his failing businesses, maybe it’s time for him to be shown the door.
