Pediatricians are adopting new strategies to persuade vaccine skeptics.

Vaccine hesitancy is not a new issue, but doctors say it has gained more traction recently due to the spread of vaccine misinformation on social media and growing distrust of the medical community.

Pediatricians across the U.S. are searching for more effective ways to address these concerns and ultimately increase vaccination rates. Some have shifted their focus to explaining the immediate risks of not vaccinating, while others share non-governmental resources that parents might find more credible. A few have even started scheduling extra appointments to have more in-depth conversations with concerned parents.

Dr. Marina Jeffery, a family medicine physician in Monroe, Louisiana, explained, “There are times where I’ll say, ‘I’d like to bring you back to talk more about this,’ and schedule a visit specifically to address their concerns.”

Despite the rise in vaccine skepticism, Dr. Jeffery and her colleagues have had some success in alleviating fears, with many parents eventually deciding to vaccinate their children.

Dr. Percy Huggins, a pediatrician at TriBeCa Pediatrics in Brooklyn, emphasized the importance of listening: “It requires a lot of listening, but it’s so rewarding when you see that shift, and they trust you to come up with a plan for their child.”
