Former U.S. Secretary of Transportation and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg is reportedly weighing the possibility of running for Michigan’s Senate seat in 2026, following the announcement that Sen. Gary Peters will not seek re-election.
A source close to Buttigieg revealed that the former mayor is considering all options to continue serving, adding that he’s “honored” by the mention and is giving the idea serious thought. The potential Senate run was first reported by Axios.
Peters, who chaired the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) twice and played a key role in helping Democrat Elissa Slotkin win a Senate seat in Michigan in 2024, explained that he had always planned to eventually step aside from Congress. Having first won his House seat in 2008, Peters said he had initially intended to serve for just a few terms before returning to private life.
