Tensions rise ahead of the Fenerbahçe-Göztepe match as clashes erupt between fans and police.

Wild wild Turkey: Fener boss Koç has to be escorted out of the stadium

After Fenerbahçe fans traveling with the team were initially denied entry to the stadium, President Ali Koç visited the away section during halftime to speak with authorities. Once the fans were allowed in, Koç began making his way back, surrounded by security. That’s when the chaos erupted! A video, widely shared on social media, shows the shocking moments that followed.

Koç was shoved to the ground as bottles rained down on him! Only with the help of security was he able to get back on his feet, and he had to be shielded from the flying bottles by police officers.

The attack has serious consequences: Koç has filed a criminal complaint, according to the club, which is also taking steps to investigate the assault on the Fenerbahçe fans, who were reportedly sprayed with pepper spray.

The attacker, it seems, had accreditation to the match. Fenerbahçe’s official statement calls the assailant a “football terrorist” who attacked the president without any provocation. Despite the severity of the incident, the perpetrator was not ejected from the stadium after the attack, leading the club to question why such a person was allowed to remain.

While Koç was escorted off the field, the attacker was briefly questioned by police but allowed to stay and watch the remainder of the game.

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has condemned the attack and launched an investigation. This follows a troubling pattern of violence in Turkish football, including an incident last March when Trabzonspor fans attacked Fenerbahçe players and a violent altercation involving the president of Ankaragücü attacking a referee. The sport in Turkey continues to struggle with incidents of aggression and unrest.
