The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, have teased an exciting new supernatural series, but this time, the setting is a bit different:
While fans are eagerly awaiting the final season of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers are already hard at work on their next projects. During a Netflix press event on Wednesday, Ross and Matt Duffer revealed that they’ll be executive producing two new shows in 2026: The Boroughs and Something Very Bad is Going to Happen. Both shows, according to Ross, will share a similar theme with Stranger Things—stories about ordinary people encountering the extraordinary.
Matt explained that The Boroughs would probably feel the closest to Stranger Things, as it’s about a group of misfits fighting an otherworldly evil. However, there’s a unique twist: this time, the misfits are a little older, living in a retirement community. “They ride golf carts, not bikes,” Matt joked, referencing the young characters in Stranger Things who famously zoom around Hawkins, Indiana, on their bikes. The show also has a stellar cast lined up, including Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, and Bill Pullman.
As for Stranger Things, the Duffers shared a sneak peek at the upcoming fifth and final season, revealing that they spent a whole year filming it and shot more than 650 hours of footage. Ross described it as “eight blockbuster movies” worth of content, while Matt admitted the process was emotionally intense for both the cast and crew. “We’ve been making this show for almost ten years,” he said. “There was a lot of crying. So much crying.”
Although Stranger Things is wrapping up, the Duffers assured fans that it won’t be the end of the Upside Down story. “There are more ‘Stranger Things’ stories to tell,” Matt teased, adding that they’re already working on them.
In addition to Stranger Things news, the event also revealed that Squid Game’s highly anticipated third season will drop on June 27, 2025. Netflix’s content chief, Bela Bajaria, teased the upcoming season of the South Korean thriller, following the success of its second season last month.
With so many exciting projects on the horizon, the Duffer Brothers and Netflix are clearly far from done captivating audiences with their storytelling.
