The Islanders have agreed to terms with defenseman Tony DeAngelo on a one-year contract.
Tony DeAngelo has signed a one-year, $1.675 million deal with the Carolina Hurricanes.
The 27-year-old defenseman had a solid 2023 season with the Philadelphia Flyers, recording 42 points (11 goals, 31 assists) in 70 games. However, the Flyers bought out the final year of his two-year, $10 million contract on July 15.
DeAngelo reflected on his time in Philly, saying, “Obviously, Coach John Tortorella and I didn’t really mesh, and that was probably the main reason things didn’t work out. But at the same time, I really enjoyed my time in Philadelphia. It was a dream of mine to play for the Flyers, and I was lucky to have that chance.” He also noted that once things weren’t going well in Philly, it became clear that a return to Carolina was a possibility, and he’s glad it worked out that way.
DeAngelo previously played for the Hurricanes during the 2021-22 season, posting 51 points (10 goals, 41 assists) in 64 games. That season, he also set career highs in plus/minus (+30) and power-play points (20) before being traded to the Flyers in July 2022.
Tony DeAngelo is a professional ice hockey defenseman known for his offensive skills and sometimes controversial career.
Born on October 24, 1995, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round (19th overall) of the 2014 NHL Draft.
Early Career and NHL Debut DeAngelo started his career in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the Sarnia Sting, where he showed promise as an offensive defenseman. His skill with the puck and ability to contribute on the power play quickly caught the attention of NHL scouts. After being drafted by the Lightning, he was traded to the Arizona Coyotes in 2016, where he made his NHL debut.
Time with the New York Rangers DeAngelo is perhaps best known for his time with the New York Rangers, where he played from 2017 to 2021. During his tenure with the Rangers, he developed into one of the league’s top offensive defensemen, recording impressive numbers, including a career-high 51 points (10 goals, 41 assists) in the 2020-2021 season. However, his time with the Rangers was also marked by off-ice issues, including controversies related to his behavior and comments, which led to his departure from the team in 2021.
Later Career After leaving the Rangers, DeAngelo signed with the Carolina Hurricanes, where he continued to put up solid offensive numbers. In 2022, he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers. His time with the Flyers was marked by tension between DeAngelo and coach John Tortorella, leading to a buyout of his contract in 2024.
DeAngelo later signed with SKA Saint Petersburg in Russia’s KHL for the 2024-25 season, before returning to the NHL in January 2025 when he signed a one-year deal with the New York Islanders to help shore up their defense.
Playing Style DeAngelo is known for his puck-moving ability, strong offensive contributions, and power-play skills. He’s often aggressive in his approach and is capable of producing points from the blue line, though his defensive game has been criticized at times. His play is marked by his ability to quarterback the power play and drive offensive plays from the back end.
While his skills are undeniable, his career has been shaped by his polarizing personality and the controversies that have followed him. Nonetheless, DeAngelo remains a talented player with a significant amount of offensive upside.
