The clock may not be ticking down for TikTok as quickly as some had thought.
The social media platform could get a lifeline from none other than President-elect Trump, who was once a vocal critic of the app. On Sunday, Trump told NBC News that he would “most likely” grant TikTok a 90-day extension beyond the January 19 deadline after taking office on Monday.
Meanwhile, TikTok released a statement on Friday regarding the “possible shutdown,” expressing disappointment over the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold a bipartisan-backed law banning the app unless its Chinese-owned parent company sells by Sunday. “The statements issued today by both the Biden White House and the Department of Justice have failed to provide the necessary clarity and assurance to the service providers who are crucial to keeping TikTok available to over 170 million Americans,” the TikTok statement reads.
The company urged the Biden administration to ensure that the ban wouldn’t be enforced, warning that TikTok would be “forced to go dark” if the White House doesn’t step in.
