Trump takes action to end refugee resettlement and parole for Cubans, Haitians, and Venezuelans.

President Donald Trump is set to sign a series of executive action.

President Donald Trump is set to sign a series of executive actions on immigration in his first few hours in office, including suspending refugee resettlement, bringing back a policy that forces migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border to stay in Mexico while waiting for their court hearings, and ending a parole program that offered another legal entry path for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans.

The CHNV parole program had allowed over 530,000 migrants from these countries to temporarily enter the U.S. during the Biden administration through a “digital queue” system, using the CBP One app. This app also allowed over a million people to request immigration appointments electronically at the southern border, a measure meant to discourage people from showing up in person for processing.

Following Trump’s oath of office, the CBP One app was shut down immediately, with its website stating that the platform “is no longer available” and cancelling tens of thousands of scheduled appointments. Both the CHNV and “Remain in Mexico” programs have faced years of legal challenges, which are expected to continue as Trump takes office. In his inaugural speech, the president declared he would send troops to the southern border to “repel the disastrous invasion of our country” and would designate drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations. According to U.S. Border Patrol, attempted border crossings were at their lowest in December since 2019.

The new administration also announced that Trump would suspend refugee resettlement, citing the strain that large and unsustainable migrant populations have placed on community resources and safety.
