“Two major wins”: Thune praises Hegseth and Noem for their confirmations to tackle border security and immigration reform.
On January 25, 2025, the U.S. Senate narrowly confirmed Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense and Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security. Senate Majority Leader John Thune highlighted the importance of these confirmations, emphasizing how they support President Trump’s efforts to strengthen national defense and border security.
Pete Hegseth’s Confirmation:
Hegseth, a former Fox News personality, was confirmed by a slim 51-50 vote, with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote. This marked only the second time in U.S. history that a vice president had to break a tie on a Cabinet nomination. Hegseth’s confirmation is seen as crucial for restoring military readiness in a time of growing global uncertainty.
Kristi Noem’s Confirmation:
Noem, the former governor of South Dakota, was confirmed with a bipartisan vote of 59-34. Her appointment is key to managing the nation’s immigration policies and tackling border security. As Secretary of Homeland Security, Noem will oversee efforts related to border security, disaster management, and counterterrorism.
Thune praised both Hegseth and Noem for their readiness to serve in these critical roles, reaffirming that their leadership aligns with President Trump’s vision for a strong national defense and improved immigration enforcement.
